A new species of Sipapoantha (Gentianaceae: Helieae) from northern Brazil Naturalis
Lepis, K.B.; Maas, P.J.M.; Struwe, L..
A new species from Gentianaceae (tribe Helieae) is described from northern Brazil. Sipapoantha obtusisepala sp. nov. is distinct from the previously single member of the genus, Sipapoantha ostrina, by having a woody and branched habit, sessile and ovate leaves with an acute apex, and a smaller calyx with circular lobes. Sipapoantha obtusisepala is based on somewhat incomplete material and tentatively placed in Sipapoantha based on the presence of key generic characters such as coriaceous leaves with strongly revolute margins and blue corollas. It has only been recorded from one locality in the Brazilian-Guyana border area in the state of Roraima.

A taxonomic synopsis of Cypella (Iridaceae) in Brazil Acta Botanica
Eggers,Lilian; Marchioretto,Rafaella; Souza-Chies,Tatiana T.; Chauveau,Olivier.
ABSTRACT A taxonomic synopsis of Cypella (Iridaceae) in Brazil is presented with recognition of 16 species, two of them represented by two subspecies. An identification key to the taxa is provided and species are described and illustrated. New synonyms are indicated, and eight lectotypes, two epitypes and one neotype are designated. Results include distribution, habitat, phenology, conservation status, notes and examined specimens of all taxa, as well as comments on dubious and misused names. The resulting framework revealed that most of the Brazilian species of Cypella occur in the state of Rio Grande do Sul and in the Pampa Biome, although Río de la Plata grasslands (RPG) is the most species-rich biogeographic unit of the genus.

Angiosperm disjunction "Campos rupestres - restingas": a re-evaluation Acta Botanica
Alves,Ruy José Válka; Cardin,Leonora; Kropf,Marcela Stuker.
A disjunct distribution pattern between the extrazonal formations of the campos rupestres (rocky grasslands) in the Espinhaço mountain range and the restingas (coastal strand vegetation) in Brazil has been proposed repeatedly for several flowering-plant species. In order to validate this distribution pattern, available data from the literature and major herbaria were compiled and evaluated. Some of these species also occur in campos rupestres on mountain ranges in Goiás state, campos de altitude (high altitude grasslands) of the Serra do Mar, and on geologically homologous rocky formations of the Guyana shield. Species that were also recorded for distinct zonal formations like cerrado, caatinga and forests were excluded from the pattern. The campo...

LIMA-VERDE,LUIZ W.; LOIOLA,MARIA I.B.; FREITAS,BRENO M..
Information about the use of floristic resources of the immediate edges of ombrophilous forest (Atlantic rainforest) fragments by stingless bees is not readily available in the scientific literature. Considering the importance of these plant species for local guilds of stingless bees, this study aimed to identify and characterize the flora of the immediate borders of four Atlantic rainforest fragments situated in Baturité massif, state of Ceará, used as food resource by stingless bees. We studied the growth-form of the plants, the floristic similarity between edges and the effect of rainfall on the flowering, and suggested simple techniques for handling these areas. We compiled a total of 82 plant species with a predominance of tree and shrub form. There...

Conservation potential of shade-tolerant forest species in agricultural mosaics in the eastern Brazilian Amazon Acta Amazonica
DO VALE,Igor; MIRANDA,Izildinha Souza; MITJA,Danielle; SANTOS,Alessio Moreira; SANTOS,Graciliano Galdino Alves dos; LEÃO,Fábio Miranda; OLIVEIRA,Mariana Gomes; COSTA,Luiz Gonzaga da Silva.
ABSTRACT Shade-tolerant forest species are among the most susceptible to habitat loss in agricultural mosaics, where a variety of croplands is connected to forests at different levels of anthropogenic disturbance. We aimed to evaluate the community similarity of shade-tolerant species among different land use types across agricultural mosaics with different levels of disturbance. The study was conducted in three municipalities in southern and southeastern Pará state, in eastern Amazonia. A multiple-community similarity measure based on the Horn similarity index was used to compare land use types and assess the resilience of shade-tolerant species towards forest loss and disturbance at the landscape level. High shade-tolerant species similarity was found...

Distribution, ecology, and reproduction of bryophytes in a humid enclave in the semiarid region of northeastern Brazil Acta Botanica
Batista,Wanessa Vieira Silva Menezes; Pôrto,Kátia Cavalcanti; Santos,Nivea Dias dos.
ABSTRACT The ready availability of water resources distinguishes the humid forest of Chapada do Araripe, Ceará State, Brazil, from the semiarid vegetation around it. The regional climate demonstrates a marked seasonality of rainfall that affects the ecological strategies of the species found there. We studied the bryophytes of the humid forest of Chapada do Araripe, analyzing their diversity, geographic distributions, and ecological and reproductive aspects. Bryophytes were collected from different substrates using the random-walk method. We gathered information concerning the geographic distribution, functional groups (life forms, light tolerance guilds, and habits) and reproductive aspects of each taxon. We found 76 bryophyte species, predominantly...

Floristic composition of the cerrado in the Pé-de-Gigante Reserve (Santa Rita do Passa Quatro, southeastern Brazil) Acta Botanica
Batalha,Marco Antônio; Mantovani,Waldir.
We studied a 1225 ha area, composed mainly of cerrado, in Santa Rita do Passa Quatro, São Paulo State, southeastern Brazil (21°36-38'S, 47°36-39'W). In three cerrado physiognomies (campo cerrado -- a wooded savanna, cerrado sensu stricto -- a woodland, and cerradão -- a tall woodland), we collected all vascular plants in reproductive stage, and identified them to species level. We found 360 species, representing 236 genera and 69 families. The richest families were: Asteraceae, Fabaceae, Poaceae, and Rubiaceae. The savanna physiognomies were richer than the forest one. The ratio between herbaceous and woody species was approximately 2:1. We analysed the whole flora and its two components separately, woody and herbaceous, comparing them with other disjunct...

Floristics, structure and soil of insular vegetation in four quartzite-sandstone outcrops of "Chapada Diamantina", Northeast Brazil Rev. Bras. Bot.
Conceição,Abel Augusto; Pirani,José Rubens; Meirelles,Sergio Tadeu.
Soil islands on rocky surfaces often harbor aggregated vegetation that consists of insular plant communities. These islands are typical of the rocky outcrops and in various parts of Brazil form the so-called "campos rupestres" vegetation. Four of such sites have been selected in the state of Bahia, Northeast Brazil, for this comparative study on floristics and vegetation structure: three areas situated inside the "Parque Nacional da Chapada Diamantina" (Guiné, Fumaça and "Gerais da Fumaça") and one is at the border of the Environmental Protection Area of "Marimbus-Iraquara" ("Mãe Inácia"). All occurring vegetation islands were studied in four random plots of 10 × 10 m per site. Soil was often shallow, sandy and acidic. Vascular plant species were...

Four new combinations in Chomelia and Stenostomum (Rubiaceae, Guettardeae) from Central America, the Guianas and the Amazon Basin Naturalis
Delprete, P.G.; Achille, F.; Mouly, A..
According to current generic delimitations, supported by wood anatomy, palynology, and recent molecular phylogenies, Antirhea, traditionally treated as a Pantropical genus, is instead restricted to the Paleotropics. At the same time, the Neotropical species traditionally positioned in Antirhea should be positioned in Stenostomum. Following these definitions, Stenostomum is a genus with most of the species present in the Caribbean Region, and two species present in the Guianas, namely S. acreanum and S. guianensis, distributed throughout the Amazon Basin. In addition, according to these new generic delimitations, two species previously positioned in Guettarda and Antirhea need to be transferred to Chomelia, as C. triflora and C. ulei.

Generic additions to the Rapateaceae of Rondônia, Brazil Acta Amazonica
RODRIGUES,Rodrigo Schütz.
ABSTRACT Rapateaceae is a monocot family centered in the Guiana Shield region of South America. This article reports four generic additions to the Rapateaceae of Rondônia, a state in northern Brazil. Cephalostemon gracilis (Poepp. & Endl.) R.H.Schomb., Duckea cyperaceoidea (Ducke) Maguire, Monotrema xyridoides Gleason, and Schoenocephalium cucullatum Maguire were recorded in lowland savannas and open white-sand ecosystems in the state. These findings extend significantly the known diversity of the Rapateaceae taxa occurring in Rondônia, and represent an extension of their geographical distribution to a Brazilian state with no part of its territory in the Guiana Shield.

Local environmental controls of Atlantic Forest tree community assembly on a coastal continental island in southeastern Brazil Acta Botanica
Nettesheim,Felipe Cito; Garbin,Mário Luís; Pereira,Marcos Gervasio; Araujo,Dorothy Sue Dunn de.
ABSTRACT Tropical forests with high species diversity are commonly found in rugged montane areas. We investigated causes of local tropical forest tree community assembly on a continental island with heterogeneous terrain. We recorded tree community (absolute species abundance), topography, soil, litter and location in 40 sampling units on two opposite sides of the island with similar heterogeneous terrain. We used transformation based Redundancy Analyses and variation partitioning to determine the contribution of environment (topography, soil and litter), spatial structure (geographic location and Moran Eigenvector Maps) and the shared effects of these to explain community assembly. The environment made a significant contribution to explain tree community...
